Museum Hopping with the Girls

Lucky me, I was Mom on the junior class art field trip and drove a van load of girls across Ohio last week. It was wonderful!

Our first stop was the Columbus Museum of Art where we saw the most wonderful exhibits.
We were there to take in American Impressionism .

"This exhibition highlights stellar works of American Impressionism held in both private and public collections in Ohio. Including approximately 75 works, the exhibition explores the variety of styles and interests that define American Impressionism. Artists such as Mary Cassatt, Robert Blum, and Theodore Robinson worked side by side with French Impressionists such as Edgar Degas and Claude Monet. The striking Japanese-inspired compositions, spontaneous application of pure pigment, and interest in the effects of natural light seen in their works show evidence of the strong influence that French artists had over their American counterparts."
(February 3 - June 4, 2006), but were treated to much, much more.
I learned about a wonderful artist, native of Columbus, whose color and style made my heart beat fast. Alice Schille: An Independent Spirit.

"As an auxiliary exhibition to American Impressionism, this exhibition will take a renewed look at Columbus's most important Impressionist, Alice Schille. An impressive array of Schille's masterpieces, in both oil and watercolor, will be assembled for the exhibition to present more fully the artist's explorations in the boundaries of color and light that mark the central concern of Impressionism."

Floral designers were asked to interpret art works throughout the museum for a gala that was to take place later that evening. I was able to watch and talk to the designers as they created their floral arrangements in the museum. Oh! the colors, the smells, the wonderfulness.
(I gush!) More in the next post.
