Workshop with Caryl Bryer Fallert

Illusion Quilt

Applipiecing blocks

Finally I am able to post photos from my workshop with Caryl Bryer Fallert. Let me just say how amazing Caryl is, her work and her vision are "beyond the beyond." She is also a remarkable teacher because she can traverse the huge distance between her own work and that of beginning quilters without much vision, who are tied to the product, not the process.

Speaking of product, the top photo is of a completed Illusion quilt (24x30) that I started at her workshop and completed at home. Using her pattern, even I could make the illusion work. Basically this pattern is paper piecing strips of fabric in gradations of color, then slice and dice and reassemble. A simple premise which is very tricky in the execution, and the chakra-like colors are so, so pleasing.

The second photo is a result of another of her workshops on applipiecing. Caryl's quilts contain the most amazing ribbons of color, curves everywhere, soaring across the expanse of the quilt. Applipiecing is her technique combining applique and piecing to obtain these great swirls. In the photo I have completed two 9" blocks using her technique. My plan is to make two more, play with their arrangement, and finish as a small quilt.

I heartily recommend visiting Caryl's web home to view her quilts if you don't know them. She is truly a great artist.
